Married Couple Never Separate More than 15 Feet Apart
Could you stay within a 15-foot range of your spouse at all times? Husband and wife journalists, David Plotz and Hanna Rosin did just that--for a day. Click on the video below to witness how the day unfolds and the lessons they learned through their new closeness.
Have you ever heard of a zombie walk? They've been around for a few years and it's essentially when a group of people (sometimes very large) get together, dress up as zombies and walk with a zombie gait in a public space, like a shopping mall or down Main Street. Seattle Weekly has a slideshow of a recent zombie walk through Seattle. If this sounds like good, creepy fun to you, check out www.zombiewalk.com to find a meeting of the undead in your area. Let us know if you've ever participated or have seen one of these in your area.
Happy Halloween everyone, and don't forget to post your costume pictures on the forum (click here).
Coming out tomorrow is a movie called Fireproof. It's based around the story of a firefighter trying to save his marriage. Just before he and his wife go down the path of divorce, the main character, played by Kirk Cameron, accepts a challenge by his father to give it another go. In the process, he finds faith and new love for God. It's the story of a firefighter who dedicates his life to saving others, but is struggling to keep his own home intact. In an interview, Cameron says the divorce rates for firefighters is a whopping 75 percent! This movie seems to have struck a nerve and been getting a lot of buzz (maybe we just surround ourselves with marriage information so it seems that way). Had you heard of this movie? Do you think you'll go see it? If you do, please post something on the network, we'd love to hear your thoughts. Click here to go to the movie's website.
If you haven't heard, the Emmy's will air this Sunday on ABC. The Emmy's have in the past been dominated by HBO, but there's buzz this year that AMC's show "Mad Men" is expected to be the breakout winner. If you're unaware, "Mad Men" does have HBO roots. Matthew Weiner, the creator of "Mad Men" was a writer and executive producer for "The Sopranos". HBO did have the opportunity of picking up Mad Men when the show was being shopped around but passed. Whoops. Don't feel sorry for HBO, though. They're expected to pile up the awards for their mini-series John Adams, where Paul Giamatti plays the second U.S. president and Laura Linney plays his wife Abigail Adams. Here are the nominees for outstanding drama series: Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost, and Mad Men.
If you pay attention to movie previews, you may have noticed their are a bunch of new romantic dramas about to hit the big screen. First up is Nights in Rodanthe starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane being released September 26th. Next up is Australia starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman and being released on November 26th. Finally, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet reunite for the first time since they made history in Titanic for their new movie Revolutionary Road to be released in January. Australia and Revolutionary Road are both period pieces, Australia taking place during World War II and Revolutionary Road in the 1950s. More about these movies can be found here. Of these movies, what are you most excited to see?
Ok, so this article from MSNBC (click here) is on getting your girlfriend into gaming, but the same rules apply after you're hitched. The first rule: Don't be a jerk, meaning don't throw your controller, drop f-bombs, and ignore your spouse when they're right there next to you because you're engrossed in the game. Another tip is to pick the right game. Don't try and force them to like Halo if they're not into it. Remember, gaming is suppose to be fun. Some recommended games mentions are Harry Potter, Rock Band, and Elite Beat Agents. Finally, try playing co-op. Many games have a cooperative mode, where you and a buddy can tackle missions as a duo. Don't forget to compliment when your spouse on their video game successes either.
Tech company NDS commissioned a study on DVRs and a surprising result was found. A whopping 79% of American couples surveyed said their DVR improved their relationship. The main reason for the improvement according to the study is that each individual in the relationship can enjoy their own programs and share their favorites with one another. Furthermore, 81% of Americans said having a DVR helped squash arguments over what to watch. Click here to read the complete report. Do you have a DVR in your home? Do you think it's improved your relationship? Talk about it on the forum.
Men love video games. Women love video games too, but that's another post. Men who spend too much time playing World of Warcraft (WoW) could find themselves creating an unhealthy relationship environment. This self-professed writer and WoW addict uses guidelines such as setting time limits on his play (click here). This can be applied to all video games--Madden '09 just came out! For other tips, you could set aside a certain day you play, throw a game party, play when the other is out or asleep, or invite them to play with you. Out of curiosity, have you and your spouse argued over too much video game play? This reminds me of that movie with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, The Break-up. Remember the scene where she's trying to get him to help get ready for a party and he's trying to squeeze in some Grand Theft Auto time? Like this one and in most other cases, video games aren't the problem just a symptom. Remember, video games are supposed to be fun, telling your friends and family you got divorced because you play them is not. Play responsibly.
Kerri Walsh, part of the defending Olympic beach volleyball champion duo with Misty May lost her wedding ring on Sunday while competing against Japan. According to the AP, Walsh went up for a block at some point during the match and the ring flew off her hand. Fortunately, some broadcasters noticed what had happened, and were able to go back to the tape to show officials where they thought the ring might be. Unfortunately, there was 17,000 tons of sand that gets raked between matches. After the day's matches had finished, however, volunteers combed the area with metal detectors and eventually found the missing band. In case you were wondering, Walsh and May won their match.
Have you or your spouse lost your wedding ring? What were the circumstances? Talk about it here.
The Kevin and Bean morning radio show on KROQ in Southern California ran segment on Thursday that got our ears perked. They had listeners call in and tell stories of things they found out from their spouse after they married. One caller found out that their spouse smoked pot, and had been doing so even before they married. One husband called in to say that his wife revealed that she has OCD and when he goes to sleep at night, flips the lights switches in the house to satisfy her OCD urge. Another caller found out that their spouse owed the government roughly $40,000 in back taxes!
Did your husband or wife reveal a surprise to you after you got married? Let us know by commenting on our Married Life network. You can hear the Kevin and Bean segment by clicking here and going just shy of halfway into the middle of the playback.
CNBC show The Big Idea hosted by Donny Deutsch ran a segment the other day on running a business with your spouse. On their website, they've posted a seven question test that grades how well you and your spouse would do in business. Some of the questions it asks are: Is your spouse a momentum builder? Does your spouse respect your time? and Is your spouse a good interrogator? Each question is weighted from 1-5 and the results range from: "Your Husband or wife is standing in the way of your success" to "Your relationship fosters success and your spouse gives you an entrepreneurial edge!"
Would you ever run a business with your spouse or are you currently doing so? Running a business together is one of those things that could bring you closer together or tear you apart. What's your story?
A while back we published an article on "Naming Private Parts." Included are some common names for men and women. We recently came across a new website that asks people to submit their "thingy" names and then vote on the most popular submissions. The site is called ThingyNames and we have to warn you that some of the names are not G-rated. At the time of this post, just shy of 40% of Hitched readers say they have a name for both his and her private parts while 35% don't have a name for either, according to the article poll. Furthermore, 18% just have a name for his and 8% just have a name for hers.
A new novel by author Sean Greer tells the story of a young housewife and her life in the 1950s. The novel is titled, "The Story of a Marriage" and is shaped by the era including racial desegregation and the execution of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg (American citizens who were executed after having been found guilty of conspiracy to commit espionage in relation to passing information on the American atomic bomb to the Soviet Union). NPR has an audio interview with the author and also an excerpt from the book (click here). Here's a little piece from the excerpt:
We think we know the ones we love.
Our husbands, our wives. We know them--we are them, sometimes; when separated at a party we find ourselves voicing their opinions, their taste in food or books, telling an anecdote that never happened to us but happened to them. We watch their tics of conversation, of driving and dressing, how they touch a sugar cube to their coffee and stare as it turns white to brown, then drop it, satisfied, into the cup. I watched my own husband do that every morning; I was a vigilant wife.
This weekend is the Olympic team trials for U.S. wrestlers. By the end of today, we'll know which women will represent the U.S. in the Olympics in the sport of wrestling. Patricia Miranda has been there before. She is the first American female wrestler to ever win an Olympic medal, a bronze in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Her husband, Levi Weikel-Magden is also a wrestler. The two met at Stanford University when they were both on the wrestling team. He later became her coach and has encouraged her to come out of retirement for one last shot at Olympic gold. This article from the NY Times tells how this husband and wife team got to where they are today, through illness, law school, sweat and sacrifice. It also tells the struggles of mixing their professional life with their home life. One highlight from the article is a story of how Levi brought home some new toothbrushes and then proceeded to try and tell Miranda how to use them. Miranda's reply, “You can’t coach me on how to brush my teeth!” Watch out Levi, she'll take you down.
Lifetime's hit show, "Army Wives" begins its second season this Sunday at 10pm EST. "Army Wives" shines a light on many real issues that face military families today including post-traumatic stress syndrome, single parenthood, alcoholism and infidelity. These issues are a far cry from the guns and explosions most military shows center around. This second season gets more authentic too. The U.S. military has allowed the show to use some of their equipment and film on real bases. If that weren't enough to get new viewers interested, presumed presidential nominees Barack Obama and John McCain have filmed promos for the new season. Go on to our social network and talk about the show with others.
Rachel Shukert was in a marriage rut. She typed in, "my husband" "addicted" "video games" "HELP" into the search engine and found salvation amongst hundreds of results. She read many bits of advice, but nothing that seemed to work. Then, her husband brought home a new video game, Rock Band, and asked if she would play with him. She did and she like it, and she was good. If your husband plays video games, you should definitely read this first-person story from Slate, click here. We've said it on numerous occasions, it's important to (a) respect your partner's hobbies and interests, and (b) participate if and when possible if it's something you enjoy as well. Rock on!

A new study published in the journalPediatrics offers a whole bunch of reasons why having a TV in the bedroom of adolescence is a bad idea. We realize that this study was done with teenagers in mind, but listen to the affects and see if you agree that it would also be a good idea to tame TV in the married bedroom. For starters, it leads to more TV viewing (of course), less time spent with the family (hopefully this doesn't apply), less time exercising (very possible), lower fruit and vegetable intake (hmm), and more sweetened beverage consumption (hmm again). Do you have a TV in your bedroom? We did an article a while back with Paul C. Rosenblatt, author of "Two in a Bed". In the article, he addresses this specific issue. Click here to read it.
Regular readers of Marvel Comics' famed Spider-Man comic book are up in arms, according to USA Today, over the roughly 21 year marriage between Spider-Man and Mary Jane ending. We don't usually cover divorce, but of course, this story has a twist. In order to save Mary Jane's life, Spider-Man made a deal with the devil-like character, Mephisto, to save her life. In return, however, Mephisto would erase all memory of their marriage together. That's right, all memories of their marriage--gone!
Looking for that perfect household gift? Games are always a good play. About.com listed their top games for 2007. We'll spill the beans on five:
Cranium Wow - sculpt, draw, act and answer your way to victory. This is an update on the already best-selling game.
Luck of the Draw from Gamewright - In this one you draw something based on a subject card that you pull from a stack. Other players vote on which category, among 100 different categories such as neatest, tallest or prettiest drawing, fits the drawing. Not sure exactly how you win the game though. If you've played this, let us know.
Hot Spot from ThinkFun - The game pieces are built like robots that can only move in a straight line. The goal is to get the red robot to the “hot spot” which is the red spot on one corner of the board. There are other blue and yellow robots that the robot can jump over to get to his goal. You have to figure out the most economical way to get to the Hot Spot.
I Spy Eagle Eye Game from Briarpatch - In this one, match one of the objects from the cards in your hand to the ones on the game board. Whoever finds an object first rings the bell and wins the round.
WonderChess and WonderGo - Like chess? What if the chess pieces had prizes in them. That's basically what this is. You can stuff whatever you want inside the chess pieces (as long as they fit) and the person that captures the piece gets the additional prize.
If you have another game you think we should know about, let us know.

Nielsen Ratings, a system developed by Nielsen Media Research to determine the audience size and composition of television programming, has begun to include into their stats shows that have been recorded on a persons Digital Video Recorder (DVR) up to three days after the original airing of the show. A true blessing for some of you I'm sure considering you might like a show, but it doesn't quite fit into your spouses TV-watching schedule. Naturally, it will also give more popular shows a boost as well. Studio execs will now be able to take into account those viewers who playback their shows, giving them the power to order, keep or cut a show. click here
Okay, so I'm a little slow watching TV, but that's what a DVR is for, right? Anyway, I just caught the premier episode of Journey Man on NBC and man did it have a great philosophical hitched dilemma. Kevin McKidd of Rome fame plays the main character, Dan Vasser. Dan inexplicably travels back in time and finds himself following a complete stranger. In these journeys back, Dan runs into his old fiance, who has since died. Dan, however, is now married, but is presented with an opportunity to relive some of his old-time romance. What do you think? Would it be cheating if he hooked up with his now deceased fiance while traveling back in time? You can find out what he decides to do by watching the episode. It's available for free on NBC.com, click here.
Aric Egmont of Cambridge, Massachusetts had plotted for months. And it happened. A long time fan of the Boston Globe Sunday magazine crossword puzzle, Egmont contacted the writers and asked if they would grant him a special request; to allow one of the answers to read "Will You Marry Me?" His girlfriend Jennie Bass, also a fan of the crossword, sat down with Egmont on that Sunday and began to fill in the answers. When she came to 111 Across she was presented with the clue "Generic Proposal." Luckily for Egmont, his girlfriend is good and filled the question mark inside his head with a "YES." Congratulations! I guess if you're a divorce judge, you probably get tired of hearing the stories. So rather than quit, one divorce judge decided to address the couples before they got to her court room. Judge Lynn Toler will share her knowledge with troubled couples on "Decision House" on MyNetworkTV, Wednesday at 7 pm. Decision House is a one-hour show that takes troubled married couples and puts them in a home. They're monitored by cameras - and experts - and the judge comes in at the end to mediate. The creator of the show is Dr. Phil's son--I guess it runs in the family. If you watch it, tell us what you think on our message board.
Sydney Australia is now the home of a new world record for the largest ever vow renewal. 278 couples gathered in the city's Centennial Park to say "I do" for a second time, breaking a Guinness Book World Record previously held by Orlando, Florida where 234 couples renewed in 2002. Have you ever renewed your vows? Discuss it here
When the TV in your home is not tuned in to the NFL this weekend, flip on over to HBO. No, not for Hard Knocks, the sports documentary following the Kansas City Chiefs through training camp. I'm talking about the premier of Tell Me You Love me on HBO on Sunday night at 9pm. The show is described as a provocative and honest exploration of intimacy through an unfiltered look at three couples. The couples all see a therapist who works to make each relationship healthier--and the therapist herself is dealing with marriage issues. In early reviews of the show, many were shocked by the intimacy, rawness and raciness of the show. The show has been getting a lot of buzz and we all know that it's not TV.
This story is pulled from a very reputable blog, Gizmodo. The short of it (no pun intended), is the story of a man who looooves Apple products. He couldn't resist and purchased an iPhone--without clearing it with his wife. This was not in the budget. As you could imagine, the wife was not very happy, but she gave him an out--get a vasectomy. Snip, snip, the man--Sean Johnson--got to keep his 8GB bundle of joy. What would you do for a surgery like this?
Do you have a little one scampering around your home? When it's time to celebrate their birthday, you know that means cake, party favors and lots of gifts. Or does it? This article from the NY Times highlights a growing movement of kids, teens and adults shunning personal gifts for more philanthropic gratification. For example, the article highlights a 16-year-old teen who used her b-day money to purchase livestock for poor families. The article starts off with a 4-year-old boy who donates his birthday greenbacks to the local fire department. Just curious, would you turn away traditional gifts for your child for a philanthropic endeavor? This makes me wonder if I would have wanted to see The Transformers movie if I didn't get them as a kid.
The brash, immature punk frontman of Sum 41, Deryck Whibley, says that marriage has changed him. I think we just received another subscription to the hitchedmag.com newsletter. Whibley was quoted, saying, "I don't know how it has, but I believe that no matter what you do, big or small, it has some kind of impact on the way you view life. There's purpose in everything we do." Ahh, little Deryck is growing up. The two Canadians, Whibley and wife Avril Lavigne tied the knot last July.
When you think barbecue, you usually think beer and Q. But if you want to try a little something different this weekend, try crackin' open a bottle. With the hot weather, the OC Register recommends trying something white or fruity. A Zinfandel or Shiraz could be just what your piece of smoked meat needs. To get more details or see what fits with what--salmon and Pinot Noir are perfect together, for example--check out the full article.

If you're not a regular to the Lifetime channel you may not be aware of a new show launching on Sunday called Army Wives. This article from USA Today says "Though the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan underlie the story lines, the series is more about the home front than the firefights that underscored cable TV's last big scripted military series, FX's Over There." Here's the full specs, "Army Wives is the first of three new Sunday series aimed at attracting the women viewers who made Lifetime a cable network powerhouse in the 1990s. On July 15, Lifetime pairs Wives with Side Order of Life (8 ET/PT) and State of Mind (9 ET/PT)." Here's the full review.
This has got to be one of the coolest and most interesting ways to view the current state of real estate. This video is about 3 minutes long, but it will give you an idea about how out of whack the real estate market currently is. Under the YouTube sign you can see the years flashing by. I guess the nice part is that the coaster is starting to at least level off.

Rich Eisen, the face of the NFL Network received an e-mail from Philly anchorwoman Alycia Lane. The e-mail contained seven pictures of Lane in a bikini. The problem, Lane sent the e-mails to an address Eisen shares with his wife, ABC sideline reporter Suzy Shuster. It looks like Lane was trying to draft a guy who was already under contract. Shuster commented in this article that she replied and even gave Lane her husband's solo e-mail address! Now that's trust. Again according to the article, here's the e-mail Shuster sent back:
"Boy, do you look amazing in a bikini . . . congrats! Whatever you're doing, (Pilates? yoga?) keep doing it - it's working for you. Anyway
