Shelter in Place: 27 Things You Might Have Time For Now
Running out of ideas of what to do while stuck at home? Here are 27 ways to get the most out of your space.

Gustavo Fring
While on lockdown, now is the time to enjoy the home you've worked so hard to live in.

It’s pretty amazing how we pay for beautiful homes and never take the time to truly relax in them.”
Over the years, friends of mine who know I sell expensive homes to people of wealth and those without, have remarked, "I can’t understand Americans. They never spend time in their homes. They are always working or on the freeway heading to something."

Like it or not, people around the world have been forced to stay home these days, thus giving them no choice but to finally chill out, relax and explore the features of their homes, most of which they pay for but rarely fully use. I, for example, for the first time, have played with my home theatre and surround sound features and started to appreciate my newly learned experience. Also, for the first time, I learned what it means to "putter in your garage." It’s been really fun.

It’s pretty amazing how we pay for beautiful homes and never take the time to truly relax in them. Many of us sleep there, bathe there, eat takeout meals there and run off. Of course, that’s not everyone. But now, with "shelter in place," as couples and families, we are also realizing how great it is to have a nice backyard, a patio or terrace, a lovely garden, and indoor features, such as hardwood floors, great appliances, a home gym, a nice TV area, and an accommodating and wonderful master suite with a fireplace and reading area.

How often have you used that master bedroom fireplace or read a novel in the adjacent sitting room? Silly how we are always on the run and never home to enjoy. The housekeepers, gardeners, and nannies often spend more time and have more pleasure in the estate homes than the breadwinner who pays for it. I’ve known executives who travel 20 days out of the month and otherwise work from the office from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It’s just considered an acceptable lifestyle in the year 2020.

Well, it may all be about to change in light of our experience with the change due to Covid-19. I expect life will now bring people home more even as things return to a kind of normalcy, and that buying a home will now be for the purpose of living in it! When all is said and done, over time, the coronavirus will leave many sad and frustrating memories behind, but fully enjoying one’s home might be one of the upsides of this unwelcome event.

While hunkering down at home, you may have been able to truly enjoy all that is available to you. If not, I urge you to do so.

Below are a few suggestions of what you can add to your new routine. Maybe you already have. If so, replace some of my recommendations with some of your own. Here are my suggestions:

1. Playing board games at night and throwing the ball in the backyard.
2. Working in the garden.
3. Puttering in the garage.
4. Home cooking in the gourmet kitchen.
5. Sipping wine on the terrace.
6. Reading while leisurely laying in the hammock.
7. Watching movies/binge watching those series you never had time for.
8. Setting up or working out in the home gym or setting one up.
