Rugged and teeming with natural California beauty, the Santa Lucia Highlands vineyards of the Hahn Estate deserve to be protected. That’s what Hahn Estate Founder Nicolaus (Nicky) Hahn recognized when he proposed the creation of the Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH) appellation three decades ago.
Today, Nicky’s family still owns and operates Hahn Family Wines and makes stewardship of the land their top priority. The winery was recently the first in the Northern Central Coast area to be certified green by the Monterey Bay Area Green Business program. In 2010, its vineyards attained Certified Sustainable status through the Sustainability in Practice Vineyard Certification program, one of the first wineries in the state to be certified. And each year, the winery completes a rigorous annual recertification. In short, Hahn Family Wines does all it can to promote the three Es of sustainability: environmental health, economic viability, and social equity.
This commitment is far-reaching because Hahn Family Wines now represents a broad portfolio of wines, including the ultra-premium estate wines of Lucienne and Hahn SLH Estate, the distinctive Hahn Winery brand, and Smith & Hook. Hahn also produces Huntington Wine Cellars; Copa del Rey, a Chilean import; and Cycles Gladiator, which is based in Lodi, California.
Nestled into the side of the Santa Lucia Highlands, the winery’s visitor center can be found up a winding drive. The naturally lit visitor center greets guests with wines that are as stunning as its vistas. When learning about the Vineyard House, many guests ask about returning to host a party or attend a local chef’s dinner. The enchanting cottage seats up to 28 in a beautifully appointed dining room and is equipped with a full kitchen. Doors open out to an expansive deck that celebrates the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the Pinnacles National Monument. But the true star of Hahn Estate is, and always will be, the vineyards that grow the Hahn Family of Wines.
